Q: My face is always flushing, and it’s embarrassing. How do I cope with it?
A: You have plenty of options but it depends on what’s causing the problem. Conditions such as rosacea, which should always be diagnosed by a professional, are actually very difficult to treat. Your best option might be camouflage. Light concealers, especially those formulated for under-eye circles, are next to useless here – you need something more heavy-duty. The trick to using thicker cream (or cake) concealers is to apply them in layers and allow them to set with a light dusting of translucent powder. Only apply the concealer where you need it, fading it out with a brush or your fingers at the edges – one of our favourites is Bobbi Brown’s Blemish Cover Stick, $50. Another option is a foundation primer that has been specially formulated to minimise redness; these are often green-tinted. Try brands such as Estée Lauder, Smashbox and Laura Mercier. Dermalogica might also offer some comfort in a new product called Sheer Tint Redness Relief, $81.90. Designed to help the skin guard against inflammation and sensitivity, and cope with the results, it’s an SPF moisturiser with a sheer green tint, and calming and skin-strengthening ingredients.
